1b) Important Information for Business Correspondence Clients

REGARDING TIME-SENSITIVE PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Be aware my commission time frame is somewhere between 4 days to 2 weeks for completion, so please plan for my translation time.
  • For a time-sensitive public announcement tied to a specific date (ex: Valentine’s Day), allow yourself enough time to provide me with a complete/final English document with the text in addition to giving me time to translate.
  • Please read the section about revisions at the end of this page (item #5).

1) PLEASE PREPARE

  2. Consider providing additional information, images, video footage, or URLs that you think will assist in providing context for the translation.

2) CONTACT

  • Contact me about your commission request.
    • NOTE: I work on multiple commissions at once and rotate working on them through the day.
    • Expect the commission to take somewhere between 4 days to 2 weeks for completion.

3) PAYMENT

  • After agreeing to the details, I will send you a PayPal invoice to be paid within 10 days. (I require payment up front before starting commissions.)
    • If you are unhappy with the commission process, we can discuss a partial refund based on how close the translation was to completion.

4) TRANSLATION PROCESS

  • I will create a shared Google Document so that you can check on the progress of your translation at any time (Google Documents show text being written in real-time).
  • As the translation nears completion, I will send you a message summarizing what is left to translate and an estimate of how much time it will probably take.
  • When the 1st draft is complete, I will check in with you and let you know what day/time I have scheduled to meet with my Japanese editor for proofreading. I will send the final version of the translation immediately after the meeting (same day).

5) REVISIONS

  • I only accept translation commissions for completely finalized English text.
    • Due to this and the fact that the commissioner is heavily involved in the translation process (being sent progress updates and having access to the Google Document), there should be no need for revisions after the commission is finished.
  • I use part of the commission funds to pay my Japanese editor for proofreading my work. Having to go back and schedule time and pay my editor again is an unreasonable request for me. This proofreading process is planned to only be done once per commission.
  • Do not add to or edit my translations after completion with text created through machine translation (ex: Google Translate). Machine translations do not understand context, often confuse vocabulary with multiple definitions, and can not provide the correct level of politeness for business communications. Translation is an art in the form of literature and can not be replicated through today’s technology.
    • If you break this rule and edit the translation after completion, please remove any mentions of my name from the project, as I can not guarantee it is natural Japanese anymore and do not endorse it.
